I was interested to read your comments on swimming giving you the same feeling as a massage. Where do you swim and what's your approach to working it in with your running miles?

In 2010 I was motivated to work-in swimming as much as possible. Which, for me, was only 2-3 days per week. Just completing the IM swim was my goal and once I reached the point where I knew I had the distance and time, I just maintained. I'm not a swimmer, never had formal training, and didn't do any drills. With the exception of a 1/2 IM 3 weeks out, all my training was in the pool at the Medina Rec. With no big tris planned for 2011, I don't expect to be swimming as much. As for the massage analogy, I'll have to go back and see what the context was when I mentioned that.

Thanks for the comment. Don't waste your time looking for that context. I think it may have been from another blog. I was doing a lot of googling and reading over the weekend on different training plans. I think yours was just the last I read and my brain carried over the comment.

I just completed one year of transitioning into endurance running. I've always been a trail runner, but more in the 3-6 mile range. Throughout 2010, I've raised my weekly miles up to currently between 35 and 40 and my long weekend run is the Fools 25K course.

I'm really enjoying it, but it's hard to find much in the way of training guidance. You can find a million training plans for running your first marathon, but not so much for endurance training. I guess the longer distance and demands makes it more of a personal thing so one size does not fit all.

If you know any resources, I'd love to hear your thoughts in an upcoming blog post. (And I've got a blog in the works, so I won't stay a lurker for too much longer...)

It's entirely possible I may have written about comparing swimming and massage. There was a time last year when my feet hurt, my back hurt, and the only thing I did that didn't hurt was swim! After a long swim I would be exhausted, but not sore. Anywhere! It was a good tired, like someone worked me over really good!

Ultra training is very individual. I've heard, read, and been told different things by different people. But I mostly just do what I can. I'm following a 100 mile plan I found online just because I liked the distance of the runs and how it built up volume. Without some "official" guidance I'd be lost. Good luck with your blog and let me know when it's ready!
